It is 1917 in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina. Although World War I had been raging for years at this point, the denizens of this remote area have gone about their business unaware of the fighting in Europe and actually believe that France might be 40 miles away from Asheville. This all changes when Rufé, the son of Liza Cagel, registers and is drafted. Liza was widowed after federal agents shot her husband because of his moonshine trade, and is vehemently opposed to Rufe’s going to fight for "The Law", questioning what the government has ever done for her family, except cause its death. In this sequel to the couple's play Growing Pains, this chronicle of the McIntyre family folows an episode of the adolesence of their daughter and two young sons, and the reactions and interactions of the parents with their children. Nellie THompson, Harry Hayden, Sam Edwards, Elaine Miller, Maren Mayo, Jackqueline Warrington, Don Baccus, Jack Edwards. The Bliss-Hayden Theater is part of the Beverly Hills Playhouse Acting School, which suggests that Sam and his brother Jack were trying to hone their acting skills there during this time.

The original 1934 production included actor Burgess Meredith. This was the first known time that Sam worked with the future Beverly (Campbell) Garland, whom he would later date and be engaged to.
